More of the Same
One Snip Rats Ass Inch
If You want me to give
one snip rats ass inch
about how You
feel about things
Then You have to give
one snip rats ass inch
about how i
feel about things
Heroes
We ask our heroes to be untouchable
Perfect shining examples of Gawd
Head
And then like sharks
With the smell of blood in the water
We follow them through paparazzi and invasion
Until their perfection is revealed
As sham
Shake our fingers
Bow our heads
Gather in our tiny insular groups
Body language co-ordinated amongst us
Backs hunched to the world
Quiet self-satisfaction
And commiserate: “Poor hero failed”
Ugly satisfaction
True self-knowledge revealed
Had only we taken up the torch
The end of the story would have been
Different
Tough Shit
"I'm tired", I told them
"Tired"
"Do you know?"
Tired
The mornings were the worst.
I'd wake up with fear in my stomach and no taste for the day
Body churning
Coughing the morning back up into the air
Tired
Pull the blankets around me
Lift my knees to my chest
Tired
They replied:
"Tough shit".

Fairy Tales and the Things
of Life
Life continues to resemble the fairy tales
Given to me
As a child
The prince; uncrowned but arrogant, secure in future knowledge
The ladies in waiting
Some waiting for the prince
Some waiting for something more or less than the prince
But waiting
Nevertheless
The courtiers
The sly whisperers
The hangers-on
The bit players in the background holding spears with
Or without
Direction
The King clutching power
The lithesome beauties blinking their long lashes
The Queen
Sweet or bitter
But always the Queen
Occasionally an innocent is sacrificed
Or a few dragons or unicorns show up
And from time to time a savior comes riding along
Now and then on a brilliant white steed
Just as often on foot
Sometimes there's brandishing of swords
And good people flit in and out
High words and low comedy
I hate when the evil Magician comes cloaking all in darkness
Weaving arcane spells
Of secrecy
And mystery
But it's all there
All the characters
All true
Just like they told me
When I was a child
